Jewelry Sizing Facts

Sizing Safely

Typically, you can easily and safely decrease a ring by one to two sizes. Going up a size can be more involved, but it can be done. However, it depends on several factors, such as the ring’s design, its age, and how well it’s been maintained. It’s also up to the jeweler’s discretion.

Going Smaller

In general it’s easier to make a ring smaller. That’s because the process involves cutting out a small part of the band, then reforming it into a circle, and soldering the ends together. If it won’t hurt the integrity of the setting, then you may be able to go down more than two sizes.

Resizing Up

Resizing rings can be a bit more difficult when you need to increase the size. If it’s just a matter of going up half or one size, then our jeweler can likely stretch the band. To go up additional sizes, it may be necessary to add metal, be it gold, platinum, or silver. When that happens, the jeweler will solder the new piece to the rest of the band. Again, though, the ability to do this depends on the original size of the band and the style of the ring.
